Training Officer Biography
Midshipman Thomas Long started his Sea Cadet career with JOSEPH P. KENNEDY, JR.
Division in 2003. During his five years in the program, he reached the highest attainable
rate of cadet-Chief Petty Officer, and now volunteers as a Midshipman with MASSACHUSETTS
BAY Division.
In 2004, then-recruit Long attended Basic Recruit Training on Camp Edwards Military
Reservation, Cape Cod, MA. He went on to attend Master-at-Arms Law Enforcement Academy
– New England on Naval Station Newport, RI in 2005; was the honor company commander
of Basic Recruit Training in 2006, as well as graduating top five in his Petty Officer
Leadership Academy class and completing the Massachusetts State Police Student Trooper
Academy; and, in 2007, he was the Leading Chief Petty Officer of Master-at-Arms
Law Enforcement Academy. Now-MIDN Long has also attended numerous other training
evolutions with the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Marine Corps.
MIDN Long transferred to MASSACHUSETTS BAY Division in April 2007 where he became
the unit’s first Petty Officer Second and First Class as well as the first Command
Chief Petty Officer. Since then, he has been the Operations Officer of Petty Officer
Leadership Academy, Naval Station Newport, RI; as well as being the Executive Officer
for Master-at-Arms Leadership Academy – New England.
MIDN Long is a recipient of the NSCC Meritorious Service Award, three NSCC Citation
Awards, two NSCC Unit Commendation Awards, the NSCC Service Award, and numerous
Honor Guard Awards, among others. He is also an Expert Marksman in pistol and rifle.
He graduated from Apponequet Regional High School in June 2008, and is a Criminal
Justice Major at Dean College in Franklin, MA.
