Fleet Week aboard USS IWO JIMA

Eight of our cadets traveled to Norfolk, Virginia and boarded the USS IWO JIMA for a 3-day trip to New York City for Fleet Week 2009. During the trip, the cadets got to visit a variety of different stations aboard the ship, learning about its systems and interacting with the crew.

Walk for Hunger

Several of our cadets participate in the annual walk for Hunger. The walk is run by Project Bread, which funds over 400 food pantries, soup kitchens and food banks all over Massachusetts. During the fundraising drive leading up to the walk, cadets raised over $2,000 for this important cause.

Boston Celtics Color Guard

On Sunday, February 8, the unit Color Guard presented the colors before the Boston Celtics/San Antonio Spurs game at the TD Banknorth Garden. Damage Control training aboard USCGC ESCANABA

On our February 1 drill, cadets got some basic instruction on shipboard damage control and dewatering. This evolution, provided by the fine DC's aboard USCGC ESCANABA, was designed to get cadets the basic knowledge they'll need to participate in the Navy's Buttercup damage control trainer later this month.

Annual Inspection

The unit's second annual inspection leads to a 3.644 score, and a certificate of Honor - the highest level of award for a unit's inspection. Yet another sign of our outstanding success over the last two years. Congratulations on a job well done!

Training aboard USS JOHN L. HALL (FFG-32)

Training aboard a visiting U.S. Navy frigate. Our advanced cadets, from Alpha and Bravo companies, participated in a day of hands-on training aboard USS JOHN L. HALL (FFG-32). Cadets were exposed to all major functions of the ship, and were given some serious hands-on training.

Unit Commissioning Ceremony

Visit to Coast Guard port security unit

At our last meeting, the unit took a field trip to Coast Guard station Cape Cod and visited with Port Security Unit 301. The crew demo'd their 25' patrol boats, and the cadets got to spend some time in the firearms training simulator.

Damage Control Trainer

Firearms training

The latest unit field trip -- to Fort Devens for a day of training with the U.S. Army's 94th Regional Readiness Command. The cadets learned how to field-strip the M9 Beretta and M11 Sig Sauer 226, and received marksmanship instruction from several U.S. Army senior non-commissioned officers.

Awards Ceremony

Several cadets received awards and promotions, one cadet was officially promoted to Chief Petty Officer, the Parents Auxiliary concept was discussed, and the CO gave a report on the status of the unit in 2007.

Day at the State House

Three senior cadets brought over 50 toys for the USMC's Toys for Tots to the Massachusetts State House. During the day, the three cadets met Secretary of Veterans Services (and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient) Thomas G. Kelley, and Speaker of the House Salvatore F. DiMasi. The cadets were able to walk through the House and Senate chambers and meet several state officials. The Toys for Tots drive was inspired by the cadets, and was a huge success.

Surface Warfare School

Check out pictures from Surface Warfare School, held at Naval Station Newport in August, 2007. LTJG Landry (CO of Mass. Bay Division) ran the weeklong training, which featured trips to a ship bridge simulator, damage control wet trainer, firefighting academy, and the USS McFaul, a guided-missile destroyer.
